WALT & Success Criteria

0–3 min

WALT: To recognise and use Arabic masculine, feminine and common irregular plurals.

1. Recognise

Identify regular feminine and masculine plural endings in written and spoken Arabic.

2. Understand

Distinguish regular forms from common broken plurals in short texts.

3. Use

Say and write accurate plural sentences with less support.

Do Now · Match from memory

Without using the table, choose the plural meaning teachers (female).

1. Learn the pattern

3–8 min

Look at the colour-coded endings. Say the examples aloud with your teacher.

SingularFeminine regular pluralMasculine regular plural
مُعَلِّمَةمُعَلِّمَات—
مُعَلِّم—مُعَلِّمونَ / مُعَلِّمينَ
Feminine – جمع المؤنث السالم

For many feminine nouns, remove ة and add ات.

طَالِبَة ← طَالِبَات
طَبِيبَة ← طَبِيبَات
Masculine – جمع المذكر السالم

Some masculine nouns add ون or ين, depending on grammatical case.

مُعَلِّم ← مُعَلِّمُونَ / مُعَلِّمِينَ

Some plurals change inside the word (broken plurals):

Foundation focus: recognise the forms and use familiar examples. You do not need to memorise every grammatical case rule today. The original reference groups رجال / نساء together as male/female plurals; they belong to different singular words (رجل / امرأة).

2. Listening · استمع

8–13 min

Teacher reads each numbered phrase twice. Pupils choose the Arabic word or meaning they hear. No computer-generated pronunciation is used.

Teacher only — reveal reading script
١. مُعَلِّمَات
٢. مُعَلِّمُونَ
٣. طُلَّاب

Read each item with clear pronunciation; don't show this script to students during the activity. 1 female teachers, 2 male teachers, 3 students (male/mixed).

3. Reading · اقرأ

13–19 min

Read the short sentences. First identify the plural word, then answer without using the grammar table.

في المَدْرَسَةِ مُعَلِّمَاتٌ وَمُعَلِّمُونَ. هُنَاكَ طُلَّابٌ وَطَالِبَاتٌ. هَذَا الطَّبِيبُ يَعْمَلُ مَعَ أَطِبَّاءَ.

4. Speaking · تكلّم

19–24 min

Partner A: ask for the plural. Partner B: answer in Arabic. Swap roles. Speak before revealing the model.

1 · Supported
مَا جَمْعُ طَالِبَة؟
2 · Reduced support
مَا جَمْعُ مُعَلِّم؟
3 · Independent
مَا جَمْعُ طَبِيب؟
Challenge

Say one short sentence with a plural noun, e.g. هُنَاكَ طُلَّابٌ.

Speaking cannot be automatically graded. Ask a partner or teacher to listen. Tick the boxes only after you have spoken.

5. Writing · اكتب

24–28 min

Complete the three short tasks. Check spelling and endings before showing the models.

Support bank (hide it when confident):
طَالِبَات · مُعَلِّمُونَ · أَطِبَّاء

Try one answer with the bank, then do the next two without it.

1. Write the plural of طَالِبَة.
2. Write the nominative masculine plural of مُعَلِّم.
3. Translate: “There are doctors.”

6. AFL · Three-question exit ticket

28–30 min

Answer independently with the grammar table hidden. One question per success criterion.
